This checklist helps non-EU suppliers and exporters understand which data points are required to calculate CBAM emissions for Crude Steel. It supports two widely used production methods—Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOSM)—to ensure accurate and efficient reporting.
🔍 1. Identify Your Product and CN Code
What to do: Confirm that your product qualifies under the “Crude Steel” category.
Why it matters: The CN code determines what emissions data must be collected for CBAM compliance.
How to proceed:
Refer to the EU’s official CBAM guidance to find your product’s CN code.
Make sure your product is categorized as crude steel (e.g., CN codes starting with 7207).
Record the CN code for use in emissions reporting.
⚙️ 2. Select Your Production Method
What to do: Identify the steelmaking process used at your production facility.
Why it matters: Different production methods generate different emissions and require tailored data inputs.
How to proceed:
You can conduct an assessment for one of the following methods:
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)
Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOSM)
🔌 3. Collect Data
What to do: Record all data points used in your production, ranging from materials/precursors to electricity used in production. Make sure to collect the data for a whole year and for the total amount of crude steel produced.
Why it matters: Energy and material inputs are major contributors to embedded emissions.
How to proceed:
List and document precursor materials used (e.g. Ferro-alloys, DRI, Pig iron)
Reach out to suppliers for emissions data or use default values based on CN codes when available.
Log total energy used (e.g., electricity) and other production metrics tied to your selected production method over each reporting period.
📊 4. Get Emissions Calculations and Reporting
What to do: Track the total output of crude steel produced.
Why it matters: This data is used to calculate emissions per tonne of product.
How to proceed:
Go to the Product Emissions section in the reporting module.
Review your calculated emissions based on the data you submitted.
Use the results for CBAM reporting obligations and to support internal ESG goals.
📝 Checklist Summary for Action
1. Identify Product and CN Code- make sure the correct CN code for your crude steel product is applied.
2. Select Production Method - Choose between EAF or BOSM based on your facility.
3. Collect Data – Record energy, material inputs, and emissions sources specific to your process.
4. Emissions Reporting - Track output and generate CBAM-compliant emission values.
