This checklist helps non-EU suppliers and exporters understand which data points are relevant for calculating CBAM emissions for Pig Iron. The process supports the most common production routes—Blast Furnace, Smelting Reduction, and Other Production Routes—to ensure accurate and efficient emissions reporting.
🔍 Step 1: Identify Your Product and CN Code
What to do: Determine if your product falls within the “Pig Iron” category.
Why it matters: The CN code defines the emissions data requirements for CBAM compliance.
How to proceed:
Refer to the EU’s CBAM guidance to find the correct CN code (e.g., codes under 7201).
Make sure the product is classified specifically as Pig Iron.
Record your CN code for emissions tracking and reporting.
⚙️ Step 2: Select Your Production Method
What to do: Identify which production method is used at your facility.
Why it matters: Different methods generate different emissions and have tailored data requirements.
How to proceed:
Choose one of the following production methods:
Blast Furnace
Smelting Reduction
Other Production Route
Note: Your data collection workflow will adjust depending on the selected method to ensure accuracy.
🔌 3. Collect Data
What to do: Record all data points used in your production, ranging from materials/precursors to electricity used in production. Make sure to collect the data for a whole year and for the total amount of pig iron produced.
Why it matters: These materials, including ores and reductants, are a major source of embedded emissions.
How to proceed:
List and document precursor materials used (e.g., alloys, pig iron, sintered ore etc.)
Reach out to suppliers for emissions data or use default values based on CN codes when available.
Log total energy used (e.g., electricity) and other production metrics tied to your selected production method over each reporting period.
📊 Step 4: Get Emissions Calculations and Reporting
What to do: Track the total Pig Iron output over the reporting period.
Why it matters: Output data is essential for calculating emissions per tonne of product.
How to proceed:
Head to the Product Emissions section in the reporting module.
Review calculated emissions based on your submitted data.
Use the results for CBAM compliance and to monitor internal ESG goals.
📝 Checklist Summary for Action
1. Identify Product and CN Code - Confirm Pig Iron classification and record the correct CN code.
2. Select Production Method - Choose between Blast Furnace, Smelting Reduction, or Other Route.
3. Collect Data – Record energy, material inputs, and emissions sources specific to your process.
4. Emission reporting- Track output and generate CBAM-compliant reports with emissions per tonne produced emission values.
